We are extremely lucky to be able to express ourselves artiscally and have the freedom to be involved in art in any way, and we therefore believe we should give a percentage of everything the label makes to those whose lives are a daily struggle, who are living under the constant threat of violence and disease.
We also believe that recorded music has been overpriced for too long, and that this has led to the social acceptance of music piracy. As artists ourselves, we want people to listen to our music but also need to cover expenses - we believe that if music is fairly and cheaply priced (easily done if you cut scores of middle men out of the equation) and also includes a charity donation in the price, people will go back to buying music, a larger quantity will therefore be sold, and the artist will end up with the same amount of money as they would have done in the first place! We really do believe that the majority of people won't steal music if it is affordable.
The basic concept of WoodenGun's Fair Trade policy is:
Cheap music for music lovers - Fair pay for artists - Help for those in need.
Each artist to sign with WoodenGun is asked which charity they would like a percentage of sales from their music to go to. As a label we support Amnesty, Médecins Sans Frontières and Urafiki - a percentage from our own music releases and 50% of all profits from merchandise etc goes to them.
We aim to get as much of the money paid for music to the artist and secondly to charity - we only take a percentage of what is left over and in some cases take 0% (for example: class war by mr moxey & lil dooze - all profits go to Urafiki, neither WoodenGun or the artists are taking anything). Any money that is made by the label will be put back into the artists for studio time, merchandise, advertising etc - we are not here to pay wages or make a profit - we are a label run by artists and we'll make our money from our own art, not other people's.
